Case of the Month: Under the Microscope

In the new Case of the Month series, Dr. Nicole Stacy presents: Abnormal heterophil morphology and increased SAA concentrations in a cold-stunned Florida manatee during rehabilitation. In this case, an adult female Florida manatee was admitted to rehabilitation with lethargy and focal cold stress lesions in early February after a cold snap event in South Florida. Impressive toxic heterophils are observed.

Special Veterinary Ophthalmology Lecture

On July 13, the Avian & Wildlife Laboratory had the opportunity to co-host a phenomenal lecture by Fabiano Montiani-Ferreira DVM, MSc, PhD from the Univeridade Federal de Parana in Brazil. Presented to the faculty of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Dr. Montiani-Ferreira discussed “Selected Topics in Comparative and Translational Ophthalmology”.

New Publication on Dolphin SAA

Check out the current issue of Aquatic Mammals for an interesting study of serum amyloid A (SAA) expression in dolphins during and after uncomplicated pregnancy. This was a collaborative study with the University of Florida, SeaWorld, and the University of Miami. The study reported elevated levels during late pregnancy and in the early post partum period.
