Acute Phase Proteins in the Przewalski's Horse

The laboratory was pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with the Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park on a study of acute phase protein expression in a Przewalsk’s horse (Equus ferus przewalski). In this study, the horse presented with an aspiration pneumonia which did not resolve over a two month period. Minimal changes were observed in hematologic analyses. Protein electrophoresis, serum amyloid A (SAA) and surfactant protein D serum concentrations were found to more accurately reflect the severity of disease.

Great Presentations at NAVC

Dr. Carolyn Cray was honored to give three presentations at NAVC in Orlando this year. Acute phase proteins are the hot button topic and she led the way with a summary of her work on acute phase proteins as an adjunct diagnostic and prognostic test in rabbits with suspected Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection. She was pleased to co-present this seminar with moderator and program coordinator, Dr. Peter Fisher of Pet Care Veterinary Hospital in Virginia Beach. Later in the week, in the Wildlife Medicine section, she presented “How, What, and Why of Measuring Acute Phase Proteins” and “Acute Phase Proteins as Clinical and Research Tools in Wildlife Species”. Many thanks to program coordinator Dr. Sonia Hernandez of the University of Georgia for this opportunity.
