New Publication on Acute Phase Proteins in Rhesus Macaques

The first report of acute phase protein expression in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) was published in the recent issue of the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine. Over 100 samples from clinically healthy animals were examined for serum amyloid A, C reactive protein, and haptoglobin levels resulting in the generation of the first reference intervals for these important biomarkers in this species.

With examination of samples from clinically abnormal animals, all APP were found to be positive reactants and albumin and iron were described as negative acute phase reactants. CRP was found to increase more than 200 fold during acute inflammation and similar increases were also observed in rhesus macaques that were experimentally infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
